Under the Sun
Taoyuan land art festical, Taiwan 2022
Inspired by the Atayal people, my site specific installation is made from bamboo and red t-shirt cord on a steel framework. The V shape of the structure mimics the tatoos made on the face of the women and the diamond pattern seen in the Atayal weaving and is replicated in bamboo and red fabric cord. The V shape bends to meet the water on one side, and on the other side reaches for the sky. The two V shapes also create a diamond shape typical of the Atayal designs and representing the sun. Under each V shape are benches to sit and rest in the shade.
This shape according to my research symbolises the « Ancestors eye » The changeable diamond patterns are the eyes of countless ancestors, and the horizontal lines represent the rainbow bridge leading the deceased to join their ancestral spirits.
The entire form and it's elegant curves represents everything on earth under the sun. The water, the mountains, the air and sky, wildlife and nature.
